Can I work past age 70 while collecting CPP and OAS?

Featured writing by Allan Norman · M.Sc. · CFP · CIM

The Short Version

Some people reach 70 still wanting to work, and they wonder whether staying on the job while also collecting CPP and OAS is a smart move or a tax trap. The honest answer is that it cuts both ways. Adding employment income on top of pensions pushes you into a higher tax bracket and can pull back some of your Old Age Security through the clawback, so part of what you earn goes to the taxman. Even so, working still leaves more money in your pocket than not working, and there can be other reasons to keep at it beyond the paycheque. The piece weighs those trade-offs plainly, which makes it relevant to anyone in their seventies deciding whether continued work is worth it once benefits are already flowing.
